This week, we travel to Everest: The Other Side, steal with I Love Boosters, fall in love with Wicker, and hit Primetime with the new releases at the cinema.
It’s yet another bumper week for new releases in cinemas. In total, nine new films are ready for you to sink your teeth into. Highlights include Everest: The Other Side, I Love Boosters, Wicker, Primetime, and Bad Day At The Office. With four other films opening, your local cinema has plenty of movie entertainment to offer.
EVEREST: THE OTHER SIDE
Walt Disney-Released Friday 30th October
Synopsis: Elite mountaineers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson try to climb and ski the direct north face of Mount Everest, the most dangerous and coveted ski descent on Earth.
Cast: Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson
Directors: Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
Cert: 12A
We saw the film at this year’s BFI London Film Festival and enjoyed it. I said about the film:
“Everest: The Other Side is a compelling, emotional, sad but uplifting documentary about overcoming death, grief, and championing the human spirit to confront and beat adversity. The footage looks incredible and rather scary at times, ending in a triumphant note. Worthy.”
I LOVE BOOSTERS
Universal Pictures-Released Friday 30th October
Synopsis: Professional shoplifters embark on a wild adventure as they target a cutthroat fashion mogul.
Cast: Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter
Director: Boots Riley
Cert: 15
We saw the film again at the festival and had great fun with it. Our editor, Phil Roberts, said this:
“Boots Riley’s #ILoveBoosters is a zany, bold and exceptional piece of cinema.
With a stellar ensemble led by Keke Palmer, the film drags us into a colourful sandbox of fashion-fuelled mayhem. With some glorious stop-motion animation, it’s a rare and hilarious triumph!”
While I had this to say:
“Boots Riley’s #Iloveboosters is a completely off the wall, hilarious, bat shit crazy movie that hits every note.
The twists in the narrative are unexpected but brilliant, the cast excels, the music slams, and the direction is superb.”
WICKER
Black Bear-Released Friday 30th October
Synopsis: When a basket maker constructs a wicker husband for a local fisherwoman, he proves more spectacular than she ever could have imagined. His soulful spirit and unique prowess soon awaken something inside her, setting off a wave of jealousy, fascination, and upheaval that threatens the very fabric of her village.
Cast: Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård
Directors: Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson
Cert: 15
I’m not going to lie. The film is one of, if not the best film of the year. I said in my review:
“Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s Wicker is a delightful, funny, emotional, and brilliant movie, boosted by excellent performances from Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, and Peter Dinklage. It is, without a doubt, one of the best films of the year. And that is saying something, with Project Hail Mary, La Bola Negra, Wildwood, Behemoth, Elsinore, The Beloved, Godzilla Minus Zero, and Wild Horse Nine thrown into the mix. These are the big films you can expect to dominate nominations at the various awards ceremonies starting soon. But Wicker deserves to be among them; it certainly earns that right. Whether it does is irrelevant. People go to the movies for a good time, to be wowed and entertained. Wicker certainly accomplishes that.”

PRIMETIME
A24-Release date: Friday 30th October
Cert: 15
We saw the film at the BFI London Film Festival and thought it was good, despite some glaring problems. I said in my review:
“Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime is a shocking look behind the scenes of To Catch A Predator, but falls into the trap of not going far enough, despite a great performance from Robert Pattinson. Or the scriptwriter Ajon Singh’s version of events, based on “Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die”
by Luke Dittrich. Instead of offering a fair, balanced, and truthful version of events and of Hansen himself, the film opts for sensationalism. At no time, apart from the suicide scene near the climax, do we really believe that what we are seeing is a true representation of people and events.”
