S.H. Figuarts Review | Chewbacca (Solo: A Star Wars Story)

The mighty Wookiee arrives to enhance your Star Wars action figure collection…

For the release of Solo A Star Wars Story in Japan, S.H. Figuarts has released two figures from the movie – Chewbacca and a Mimban Stormtrooper. They are also expected to release a figure of the new Imperial Patrol Trooper in the coming months. It’s obviously strange they didn’t release Han Solo, the main character and as far as we know, he’s not even in the works. Despite, their choices of characters, you won’t be disappointed by Chewie and the trooper!

SH Figuarts Chewbacca Solo Review

A Chewbacca from A New Hope was released last year, which gave Figuarts the added benefit of a ready-made sculpts for this one. This new Chewbacca isn’t simply a repaint, it is also an improvement over the previous version. The A New Hope release had an issue with the articulation of the head. The hair in the back of the neck prevented the figure from moving its head with any real freedom. Now, Figuarts has fixed this issue by sculpting a separate piece of hair for the back of the neck, it’s also smaller so the head can move properly.

The Figure:

For this Chewbacca, they used a light brown colouration more in line with his appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He has a brand new bandolier, a new blaster rifle, a new interchangeable head and two new hands. The weapon and the bandolier are nicely detailed and painted accurately. The new hands have been specifically adapted for this new weapon. In total, Chewbacca has three interchangeable heads and six interchangeable hands, which is pretty cool.

The first two heads have the same expressions as the A New Hope one – normal and angry. The new head has the snow glasses from the Conveyex heist sequence on Vandor. As usual, Figuarts nails it with their digital face print tech, it’s as realistic as it can be.

Chewbacca has 20 points of articulation. It makes sense to give him additional articulation as it’s he’s hairy character and to allow all this to move requires more articulation than the usual figure. You can get some really great poses with this one!

Final Thoughts:

Overall, this is an amazing addition to the Figuarts line, showing us once again how this brand is dedicated to giving us the best action figures on the market and always ready to improve things. This Chewbacca fits nicely with Han Solo from the Black Series and is the perfect addition to your Star Wars collection!
