Annlyel reveals the individual scenes in The Force Awakens featuring Kylo Ren that made her an immediate fan of the character.
When one thinks of villains and Star Wars the first character to immediately spring into the mind used to be solely Darth Vader. He was (and still is) the iconic antagonist that struck fear in viewers’ hearts and inspired a generation of fans.
I remember when it was first announced that Adam Driver would play the role of the villain for the upcoming Star Wars movie. I was excited but I had no idea who he was. I hadn’t seen him in Girls or any other films but I liked that because then we would be introduced to a new face rather than the role going to someone we already know for other more popular movies or television shows.
When the first teaser arrived for The Force Awakens and it showed the back of Kylo Ren traipsing through the snowy forest before halting, igniting his lightsaber with the iconic crossguard I practically lost it. At that moment I was super excited to see this character but there was still a part of me that was hoping he would live up to the hype. He did. Oh my goodness, he did.
There was, however, a specific moment that changed my view of him forever.
Kylo Ren: The Village Raid
Yeah, Kylo Ren captivated me as soon as he appeared in The Force Awakens. I remember sitting in that dark theater watching the movie for the first time and as he walked down the ramp of his shuttle with John Williams’s epic score blaring in my ears my eyes were wide with wonder. It wasn’t, however, until he spoke that I was truly converted into a Kylo Ren fan. Darth Vader’s iconic baritone voice provided by James Earl Jones is an amazing sound to the ears but I had never been provided with the luxury of hearing it in the movies. To hear Kylo Ren’s warped voice under the tantalizing format of IMAX was truly special indeed.
I was utterly riveted by his conversation with Lor San Tekka and when he killed him with no remorse it was immediately revealed that he was a ruthless antagonist worthy of following in Darth Vader’s footsteps. And then! watching him freeze that blaster bolt with the Force, thus freezing Poe at the same time was easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen. There was no more debate. Kylo Ren was awesome and I could watch the rest of the movie entirely assured that he was a great character capable of rivalling one of the greatest villains of all time; Darth Vader.
Be sure not to miss my next segment of this series which will focus on the incredibly lovable Poe Dameron.
