Is The Title 'The Rise of Skywalker' A Spoiler or a Hint At Something Greater?

Does the title of J.J Abrams’ new Star Wars movie have a deeper meaning?

The long-awaited teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has arisen and just to make things short, it was awesome. Absolutely, perfectly, undoubtedly awesome. If there is anyone who saw this trailer and didn’t think it was amazing…well, that’s on you. But for the majority of Star Wars fans, we all pretty much lost it and are still losing it, in fact.

Is The Title 'The Rise of Skywalker' A Spoiler or a Hint At Something Greater?

Of course, with the teaser came the highly-anticipated title which turned out to be The Rise of Skywalker. It’s a blunt name that reaffirms that this movie is all about the Skywalkers, or a Skywalker, but who? Who is this title referencing and is it a potential spoiler placed right before our very eyes?

Well, it’s obvious that J.J Abrams is trying to convey something with this title but it can’t be as straightforward as talking about Kylo Ren, considering that he’s the last person alive with a connection to the Skywalker lineage. And then…it could be as well.

If so, is this title hinting at Ben’s ascension to the light or his rise in power for the dark side? I have always felt like this trilogy is setting up a powerful finale for Kylo Ren and that it’s all leading to him renouncing the dark side but what if he doesn’t? What if he wallows in darkness all the way until the end and The Rise of Skywalker is actually a hint at a very dark ending that leaves every Star Wars fan in emotional pieces?

Or, is Rey, in fact, a long-lost Skywalker after all and this title is conveying her rise? That definitely seems plausible (because we want this to be a good ending right?) but the only thing about that is the idea that she’s a Skywalker. We went over this debate four years ago after The Force Awakens came out and I’m pretty certain that she’s not a Skywalker. It just doesn’t make sense other than to appease the idea that she’s so powerful and she’s, according to Kylo, a nobody. And honestly, I wouldn’t want her to be a Skywalker. I like the idea that she’s this unknown character with this super boring lineage, showing that anyone can be the chosen one. Not just a Skywalker.

Now, the only powerful lineage that I would want to see her connected to would be her relation to Palpatine. There have been many fascinating theories surrounding this idea and with Palpatine returning for The Rise of Skywalker (*squeal*) anything’s possible.

Of course, there are two other candidates as well. Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Both father and son are deceased and now inhabit the galaxy as Force ghosts. With Mark Hamill set to play a small role in the upcoming Skywalker saga finale and Hayden Christensen making an appearance at Star Wars Celebration we could very well see Anakin and Luke Skywalker, as ghosts, return to save the galaxy one more time. And if that happened I think I would cry with happiness.

Or, is there another? J.J Abrams is good at keeping secrets when it comes to his films, meaning we have no clue what he has up his sleeve. If they kept the return of Palpatine this secretive for this long, well, we won’t know what’s going on until we’re sitting in that theater this December.

  1. Hopefully Luke comes back we need some think where Luke shows his true power like in legends (old canon before disiney took over) this moive will either show that the skywalker triligey was not something we should have mest with or it could be that this could make star wars the way it was back when Lucisfilm had it.
