Rumours break of a possible return to the MCU after a blunder at the Saturn Awards
Stop the presses! Could be Robert Downey Jr be set to make a spectacular and unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
During Deadline‘s coverage of this past weekends Saturn Awards where Downey Jr won the best actor award for his role in Avengers Endgame, it was revealed that the actor would indeed be making another appearance as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Scarlett Johansson’s upcoming solo adventure Black Widow.
Here’s how the report was phrased:
Robert Downey Jr.’s swan song performance as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in Endgame, earned him the best actor in a film award. (Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020.)
Now, until this rumour is addressed by Marvel Studios I would take this information with a very large pinch of salt. However, should the rumours turn out to be genuine I will be the first in line to unleash my happy feet and celebrate like a true fanboy. Downey Jr’s Tony Stark was my anchor in the MCU and the idea of him never appearing again was heart-breaking … even though his swansong in Endgame was, in my opinion ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
Set to appear alongside Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff and Mr. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, will be David Harbour (Stranger Things/Hellboy) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, an ally from Romanoff’s past, Florence Pugh (Midsommar) as Yelena Belova, a sister-figure to Romanoff, and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite/The Mummy) as Melina, a seasoned spy.
Cate Shortland (Lore) is directing Black Widow from a script written by Captain Marvel‘s Jac Schaeffer
Black Widow is set to hit screens on May 1st 2020.
