The Rogue One co-writer returns to the galaxy far, far away to bring Cassian Andor’s spy thriller to the screen
The Mandalorian is set to be unleashed upon the galaxy in the coming weeks and anticipation is already through the roof for the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV series. Jon Favreau appears to have crafted a sensational addition to the saga and although the gaze of the world is firmly focussed on the adventures of Pedro Pascal’s mysterious gunslinger, fans are already getting excited for the other Disney+ series heading our way.
In addition to the fantastic Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring saga stalwart Ewan McGregor, Rogue One‘s Captain Cassian Andor is set to make a sensational return to the screen alongside his cantankerous droid K-2SO in an all-new espionage thriller. And the latest word coming out of Lucasfilm is that the series has finally found is writer/director.
Variety has now reported that Tony Gilroy has joined the highly anticipated series and had signed on to pen the pilot as well as direct multiple episodes. Of course, Gilroy is no stranger to the Star Wars universe after having co-written Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and directed several of the extensive reshoots. What is certain however is that his involvement will come as music to ears of the fans who will be eager to see the series harness the tonal brilliance of what many consider to be the best Star Wars movie of the Disney era.
Alongside Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO, Diego Luna will be reprising the role of Cassian Andor for the new series, which has been described as a “rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”
Sadly, there’s still no word on when production on the Cassian Andor series might get underway, but Disney had previously indicated that the series would debut on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
