BBC releases bloody teaser for Dracula series from the creators of Sherlock
Between their stellar work on Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC smash hit series Sherlock, Steven Moffatt and Mark Gattis are busy sinking their teeth into new material. The duo has set their sights on an all-new Dracula mini-series for BBC/Netflix based on the classic Bram Stoker novel. Taking place in Transylvania in 1897 and consisting of three 90-minute episodes, Dracula will find the blood-drinking Count drawing his plans against Victorian London.
Ahead of this deliciously blood-thirsty new series, the BBC has released the first teaser for the upcoming bloodfest, which offers an insight into the spine-chilling delights that await us when the series hits the BBC this Christmas. Enjoy:
The role of the legendary vampire has been filled by Claes Bang, best known for his work on The Girl In The Spider’s Web. In a statement released when he cast in the role earlier in the year, Bang said:
“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock. I’m so excited that I get to dig into this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes, he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character”
Dracula is rumoured to premiere on BBC One in the U.K this Christmas, but will also be available on Netflix everywhere outside of the U.K.
Personally, I feel this is a massive missed opportunity. Steven Moffatt and Mark Gattis are hugely talented writers and their interpretation of Bram Stoker’s glorious novel would have made for the perfect Halloween night spectacle. Releasing the series during the busy festive period is baffling, especially when all hallows eve is upon us, but regardless of this bizarre timing issue, I am totally on board for this series. As a Dracula super-fan, I cannot wait to sink my teeth into this new incarnation, and I will be ready for the bloodletting come Christmas!
Welcome to Transylvania!
