Annlyel shares her favourite moment from THE BEST SEQUEL EVER MADE – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
The Empire Strikes Back is one of the best movies ever made and I believe one of the best sequels ever made. It delivered a gut-punching story that only aggrandized what was already a perfect story, challenging the heroes in ways they didn’t see coming and providing the audience with a jaw-dropping plot twist that has not, in my opinion, been topped to this very day.
As someone who watched the prequels before the original trilogy, I already knew the fact that Anakin a.k.a Darth Vader was Luke’s father but it didn’t dampen the eventual reveal when Luke discovered the truth. It is a truly outstanding sequence that builds upon its epic setting and music, delivering a heck of a knock out punch to the senses.
Now, you may be thinking this is my favorite moment in The Empire Strikes Back and actually, it isn’t. Yes, it’s amazing. Yes, it’s never been topped in cinema. But it’s not my favorite scene because there’s another scene shortly after that makes me even happier.
And that particular scene is the first time Leia feels the Force.
Luke’s in trouble, none of his Jedi masters is coming to his rescue, but, knowing the power of the Force, intuition had him call out to Leia. Clip to the next shot, we see Leia in the Millennium Falcon flying away from Cloud City with this strange look on her face. She doesn’t know Luke is her brother, she doesn’t even know she has the Force, but there’s this feeling. She can literally sense him talking to her, calling her for help, and she uses that intuition to save his life.
It’s a subtle moment but to me, it’s the most impactful scene in the film. And it has only grown more special after finally seeing her get to use her power at a greater level in The Last Jedi.
I love Princess Leia and this scene only reiterates why.
