The franchise legend will officially return as Peter Venkman in Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters sequel
Despite a multitude of rumours and being photographed with the cast and crew, Bill Murray’s participation in Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters sequel has never legitimately been confirmed. The series legend cemented his legacy as Doctor Peter Venkman in Ivan Reitman’s original movies and is adored by millions of fans around the world.
However, despite Ghostbusters 2020, (Rumoured to be titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife) completing principal photography, Murray’s involvement has remained very much up in the air. Franchise veterans Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts have all been confirmed as returning which sparked hopes of Murray’s return but the actor has never been shy about his feelings toward making another sequel.
Well, the speculation is over. Bill Murray is officially back and will reprise his role as Doctor Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters 2020. Confirmation came from Ghostbuster co-creator Dan Aykroyd who revealed the news during an interview on the Greg Hill radio show. Akyroyd said:
“Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third. The next generation hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars and players and actors and characters. We’ve shot our part, myself, Murray, Sigourney, and Annie Potts, and it was really exciting working on this new idea. A new take on the story, which Jason, who’s a really incredible and fine filmmaker, came up with. So I’m pretty excited. … You don’t know what’s gonna be a hit or not, but I have really good feelings for this, just because of the quality of the stars we’ve got there. We’ve got some really terrific young actors, and a great story, a great setting. It’s gonna be scary, it’s gonna be thought-provoking, it’s gonna be very heartfelt. You’ll feel it, if you have loved ones that you miss and you’ve lost and you want to get back with, it’s gonna be evocative in that way.”
The tragic loss of Ghostbusters co-creator Harold Ramis has had an obvious effect on the screenplay prompting a passing of the torch storyline, but from the sound of things, Jason Reitman has done a bang-up job in producing a heartfelt sequel that will pay tribute to our missing Ghostbuster while upholding the traditions of the series.
Written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, the sequel centres on:
a family who moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.
The family is being played by Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard. Oliver Cooper, Celeste O’Connor with Paul Rudd on board to play a seismologist who is teaching summer school while investigating some mysterious seismic activity.
Ghostbusters 2020 starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts will be ready to believe you on July 10th, 2020.
