Who is the best candidate to helm the next Star Wars movie? Annlyel investigates.
Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi have had quite a year already. Both directors/writers were nominated for an Oscar for their individual works on Knives Out (Rian Johnson) and Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi.) Waititi would go on to win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay while Johnson proudly flaunted his Porg pin (you go, Rian Johnson.) And now that award season is over, it’s back to the nitty-gritty. Which one of these exceptional moviemakers should make the next Star Wars movie? Well, there’s plenty of reason for both of them to make a film in a galaxy far, far away.
Taika Waititi recently directed an episode of The Mandalorian and it was nothing if not fun from beginning to end. His style of storytelling was apparent throughout its entirety and he managed to inject even more life into the already-awesome season finale. Rian Johnson wrote and directed The Last Jedi and we know how that went; it divided the Star Wars fandom in half. That doesn’t mean he didn’t aim to tell a great story though.
So, of these two individuals, who should make the next Star Wars movie? Honestly, I love them both and would love to see the visions they bring to this franchise but if I HAD to choose I’m picking Rian Johnson. After seeing The Rise of Skywalker and being so royally disappointed, I want to know what Rian Johnson can do with a fresh new script. And we know he’ll bring imagination and something we’ve never seen before to this story so yeah, come on Disney, announce his new Star Wars movie coming in 2022.
