Annlyel reports on John Boyega‘s passionate Black Lives Matter speech.
For the past two weeks, the world has been in united mourning over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man who was brutally murdered by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The graphic video of his murder shocked hundreds of thousands of people around the world, reigniting the #BlackLivesMatter movement in a powerful uproar that is still transpiring (and growing) to this day. It’s been a beautiful thing to see with so many people of different races and sexual orientations coming together for a common cause across seas and among the celebrities standing up for this, at times, a controversial movement was John Boyega.
John Boyega has never been quiet on his stance with racism and he’s experienced quite a bit of it himself ever since he first appeared in the teaser trailer for The Force Awakens. “Stormtroopers aren’t black!” was the consensus of a certain group of Star Wars fans when they saw it. There was even talk from a small portion of the fanbase who were going to boycott the movie. It would still go on to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time, making $2 billion.
Last week, however, was a boiling point for the now-iconic Star Wars actor. He stepped off of Twitter and joined the movement for real, delivering a passionate speech to his fellow Brits that brought tears to my eyes. I was so proud of Boyega who, knowing that this could very well be the end of his career, decided to stand up and fight (peacefully) for what he believes in. It felt like a turning point in his career and at that moment, it felt like Finn, the big-deal-Resistance-hero that he portrayed in the Sequel trilogy, had truly come to life.
May the Force be with you John Boyega, always.
