Joseph Kosinski is being eyed to direct a new take on the tornado chasing adventure
Okay, chalk this one up as another potentially unnecessary reboot. Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is set to raid its back catalog once again to reboot the storm chasing adventure flick Twister.
According to Variety’s sources, Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy/Oblivion) has been tapped to direct the feature with Hollywood legend Frank Marshall on board to produce. No plot details have been revealed, however, Universal is said to be meeting with writers over penning the script.
Although not being a runaway box office smash, the original Twister starred screen legend Bill Paxton and the talented Helen Hunt as storm chasing divorcees on a quest to study the biggest tornado on record. The movie boasted the writing talents of legendary author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) and the directorial vision of Jan de Bont and boasted the best cutting edge visual effects at the time. In the years since its release has gone on to become somewhat of a cult classic.
Personally, I fail to see the attraction of rebooting Twister. It doesn’t exactly scream out for the reboot treatment, however, with the right story and utilizing the latest cutting edge visual effects cinephiles could be in for a wild ride when the movie hits multiplexes.
As of press time, the studio has failed to set an official release date. In the meantime, Joseph Kosinski’s next project will be Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick which is set to hit screens this Christmas.
So what say you FOTF community? Do you think Twister deserves the reboot treatment or is Universal barking up the wrong tree? Sound off in the comments section below.
