Meet Ryan Wilder – the highly skilled and wildly undisciplined new Batwoman
The CW has found its new Batwoman. Just weeks after it was revealed that Ruby Rose would be relinquishing the cape and cowl after only one season, it’s been confirmed that Javicia Leslie has been tapped to slip into the Batsuit for the upcoming second season.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in a statement.
At the time of her departure, it was revealed that Ruby Rose‘s character would not be recast with the studio opting instead to write Kate Kane out of the show leaving the slate clean for an all-new caped crusader to take over the mantle. And that new Scarlet Knight is Ryan Wilder. The character has been described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Although Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane will no longer be suiting up and jumping across rooftops in season 2, series showrunner Caroline Dries has confirmed that the character will not be killed off. Quite the opposite in fact. She elaborated by saying: “As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past 15 years, I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope and I have no interest in participating in it. Like you, I Love Kate Kane…We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of Season 2.”
No sooner had the news broke, Ruby Rose took to Instagram to share her admiration for her successor. In the post, she said: “OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!”
As for our new Batwoman, and the jury is still out on Javicia Leslie. The actress cut her teeth on shows like MacGyver, The Family Business, and God Friended Me but assuming the mantle of Batwoman is a different beast entirely. Personally, I am not a fan of the idea of simply writing Kate Kane out of the series. The character has been associated with cape and cowl for many years and the thought of banishing her to outskirts doesn’t sit well with many fans, myself included. That being said, Leslie brings a wealth of experience to the role and her skillset is known to included training in Muay Thai, boxing, weapons, and dance – so we can expect to see an all-action series when the show returns in January 2021.
