Holy new series, Batman. Bruce W. Timm, Matt Reeves, and J.J Abrams will collaborate on a new Batman Caped Crusader Animated Series for HBO Max
Light the Bat signal and polish the Batmobile because a new Batman Caped Crusader animated series has been announced. HBO Max and Cartoon Network have ordered the series and have appointed Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce W. Timm as executive producer.
Ordinarily, this news would be noteworthy enough, but when you throw in additional executive producers like Matt Reeves and J.J Abrams, the news triples in awesomeness. Titled Batman: Caped Crusader, the series will be true to Batman’s detective roots. Moreover, the series will be cinematic and evocative of the Dark Knight’s noir origins.
The trio has this to say about the project:
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”
“It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “Batman: Caped Crusader will entertain first-time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making.”
“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Sam Register, president of WBA and Cartoon Network Studios. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt, and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”
THE ANIMATED SERIES
Bruce Timm famously brought the spectacular Batman: The Animated Series to the screen. And in doing so, delivered the definitive version of the Dark Knight. And with a voice cast featuring Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker; the series has become THE benchmark. The bar that all other incarnations of the Caped Crusader inspire to be.
If Bruce Timm can replicate the magic he brought to that series and inject it into Caped Crusader, we could be in for one hell of a series. And with Matt Reeves and J.J Abrams bringing their incredible talents to bear on Gotham City; Batman Caped Crusader has the potential to become a true classic. In every sense of the word.
There is no word on whether Kevin Conroy or Mark Hamill will play any part in the new series. But given that the series is a fresh take on the source material, a fresh cast seems the most likely outcome. But just the idea of these incredible talents working on a new Batman series is a tantalizing prospect. And I cannot wait to get my first look.
