I have heard a lot of positive talk about Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar. And since I love Kristen Wiig’s work, I decided to finally check out this movie! But can it really be the next big summer feel-good movie?
STORY
With Bridesmaids, both Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo proved to be skilled writers. They even got an Oscar nomination for their screenplay. And with Barb and Star, they have reaffirmed that! These two have crafted quite the story. Once again, they have written a comedy but a very different type of comedy. It’s a totally absurd comedy. Watching the movie, reminded me of The Naked Gun and Austin Powers. It’s completely ridiculous and insane! I think it’s the laugh we needed during these tiring times.
There are a few scenes when the movie goes full musical for no reason. And I’m all for it. These scenes are way too good! At other times, the movie goes full “save the world/spy” stuff. There’s romance too. It’s a big package of ridiculousness. The movie is about Barb and Star who go to Vistal Del Mare and who are going to have the adventure of their life – falling in love, having fun, discovering their true self, and saving the world.
CAST
Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are hilarious in this movie! Kristen not only plays Star but she also plays the villain who’s halfway between a James Bond villain and Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka. It sounds weird putting it like that but it is. Like I said before, it’s an absurd comedy!
Then you have Jamie Dornan who is excellent in this role. It’s nice to see him play something so different from what he does usually. And his singing is impressive! His big musical moment “Edgar’s Prayer” is way better than it had any right to be. The lyrics are stupid but the way it’s played and sung makes it great! I can tell you that song is going to be stuck in my head for a while. I have to mention Damon Wayans Jr. too who is playing a secret agent who can’t seem to stay secret. The whole gag with him is that he keeps revealing stuff he shouldn’t. There are also some nice cameos like Andy Garcia!
VISUALS
This movie has bright colors. It fits with the kitschy look of Barb and Star. So it adds to the ridiculousness of it all. As for the musical sequences, they are well shot. They’re worthy of great music videos!
VERDICT
Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar is a ridiculous comedy. It’s exactly what we need right now! And Jamie Dornan is one of the highlights of this great comedy!
