All in all, Marvel’s What If…? is only getting more and more interesting by the week and the great thing is, we still have five episodes left!
When I first heard that Marvel Studios was going to make an animated series called What If…? I was excited. But I ultimately thought the show was going to be for children. Then I watched the first episode. As Peggy Carter bashed her enemies unforgivably with a beautiful vibranium shield sporting the colors of the United Kingdom I sat back and thought to myself, “Wow, this series is kind of awesome.”
The next two weeks have been just as delightful to watch as I’ve watched this show get super creative with its weekly themes. T’Challa’s bravado as Star-Lord was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Watching The Avengers being murdered one by one was terrifying but compelling. And now this week’s episode has taken creativity to a whole new level.
EPISODE 4 GOES DARK
The fourth episode is titled What If…Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands? and is utter pain and tragedy through much of its run. Yes, there are a few jokes sprinkled through the darkness but the subject material forces you to sit silently with occasional teary eyes and observe how incredibly dark this series can be.
Benedict Cumberbatch is back to inject the heart and soul into Doctor Strange that I have come to personally love. He carries every moment and manages to inject all the levels of feeling he needs to convey for every scene. I was suddenly reminded why he did such a great job voicing Smaug in the final two Hobbit movies.
Of course, with Doctor Strange being my favorite Marvel hero, this episode is my favorite of the series so far. I loved the darker theme, I loved seeing Doctor Strange’s new powers…even the scary ones. And I loved that this episode took a surprising turn and went there with that shocking conclusion. If you’ve seen the episode you know what I’m talking about.
All in all, this series is only getting more and more interesting by the week and the great thing is, we still have five episodes left!
