Review | Josee, The Tiger And The Fish

Josee, The Tiger and The Fish is an heartfelt and sweet movie that is not only a love story but also a powerful story about characters finding themselves. It’s a must-watch.”

Josee, The Tiger and The Fish was first released in Japan in 2020. The rest of the world had to wait a little bit longer as usual to discover this anime movie. It got a limited cinema release in the US on July 12 2021 with FUNimation and in the UK on August 11 2021 with Anime Limited. Though, France got a proper cinema release with Eurozoom on June 16 and it is now available on blu-ray and DVD.

STORY

Josee, The Tiger and The Fish is a romantic drama that focuses on Tsuneo a college student and Josee a young woman stuck in a wheelchair. Tsuneo works at a dive store while studying. He has dreams of going to Mexico for his studies. While Josee spends most of her days stuck at home painting and dreaming of the sea. Everything changes when she inadvertently meets Tsuneo. He is going to help her explore and find her place in the world. Tsuneo’s world is also changing thanks to Josee.

It’s more than just a sweet love story. Beyond that, Josee’s handicap shines a light on how society can see people with a disability and how it can affect them. Indeed, Josee’s fear of the world is what prevents her to live her dream, that and her grandmother overprotecting her. So it’s also a powerful and heartfelt story about characters finding themselves. It’s a movie that will warm your heart. I do think it’s worth watching.

VISUALS

I love the visual style of this movie. The scenery is colorful and often feel like paintings. While the animation on the characters is more simple but very expressive. it works very nicely with the story.

SOUNDTRACK

Evan Call composed the score for this movie. He previously worked on Violet Evergarden. He has proven to be a talented anime composer. Once again, he has done a beautiful job with this score. There’s two highlights in this soundtrack for me. Firstly, Take Me Far Away by Evan Call, it’s the opening song. Secondly, 蒼のワルツ by E ve, it’s the end credits song. These two songs are currently stuck in my head, they are great!

VERDICT

Josee, The Tiger and The Fish is an heartfelt and sweet movie that is not only a love story but also a powerful story about characters finding themselves. It’s a must-watch.

Josee, The Tiger and The Fish is available on blu-ray and DVD in France with the distributor Eurozoom.
