A new thirty-second TV Spot for Dan Trachtenberg’s PREY reveals the threat posed by the new Predator
We are just over two weeks away from Dan Trachtenberg’s PREY and the hype train has well and truly left the station. Last week we brought you the incredible new Disney+ key art from the Predator prequel revealing the confrontation between the Predator and its prey. But today, a new 30-second teaser reveals a new look at the redesigned alien hunter, notably, its lethal arsenal of weaponry. And if you were hoping for the return of its famous wrist blades, you’re in for a real treat. But before we get ahead of ourselves, hit play and check it out below.
SYNOPSIS
The newest entry in the “Predator” franchise, 20th Century Studios’ “Prey” is an all-new action- thriller set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. It is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior who has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains. So when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
A NEW BREED OF PREDATOR
Despite PREY taking place 300 years before the original Predator, it is wonderful to see the redesigned hunter using so many of its iconic weapons. Its cloaking device, wrist blades and famous mask are all making a welcome return. However, despite the tease in the trailer, the Predator will not be using its lethal plasma caster in the movie. And that is by design. But, in a recent interview with Empire, Dan Trachtenberg confirmed that although the Predator will be without its famous weapon, the new hunter will have a few nifty new gadgets to call upon.
“The primary thing that I wanted to remove was the plasma caster. Just because it just felt like such an instant win button. I wanted to make sure that the fight could be as exciting as possible without stripping it of its advantages. He doesn’t have all the tools that he has in the newer movies. But he does have awesome new gadgets for people to see.”

NEW WEAPON?
So, the million-dollar question is if the iconic targeting reticle won’t be followed by a blast from a plasma caster, what new weapon will the Predator be utilizing in PREY? Don’t expect an answer from Trachtenberg’s team. They are remaining tight-lipped on the subject. But when you have a Predator as large as a bear, the loss of the plasma caster won’t take anything away from its menace. And so far, the reactions from the fans have been overwhelmingly positive. Some are hailing PREY as one of the most anticipated entries in the series for some time. And rightly so. The movie looks incredible and effortlessly captures the survivalist atmosphere of John McTiernan’s franchise originator. But can Trachtenberg capture lightning in a bottle and recapture the magic of the original Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted blockbuster? That remains to be seen.
We can only hope that the movie lives up to the anticipation when it drops on Hulu/Disney+ on August 5th.
