HBO Max Drops New Info About Colin Farrell's Penguin Series

HBO Max has finally shed some light on where Colin Farrell’s PENGUIN spin-off series fits in The Batman timeline

It’s been a minute since we heard fresh news about HBO Max’s upcoming Penguin spin-off series. Last we heard, Cristin Milioti had joined the cast as Sofia Falcone, presumably to add some weight to the criminal underworld. But although the series had been given the green light at HBO, the streamer has allowed the heat on the streets of Gotham to cool somewhat.

Of course, the overhaul at DC Studios was bound to affect many projects moving forwards. But with projects like Batgirl already being axed by the studio, the shake-up had some fans fearing the worst. But now, in a fresh interview with Variety, HBO Max’s head of originals Sarah Aubrey has shared a few much-needed nuggets of information. And they reveal when and where the series will fit into Matt Reeves’ timeline.

TIMELINES

“Penguin will sit immediately after the end of The Batman and temporally before the events of the second movie,” said Aubrey. “The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two. But the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say.”

“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can,” continued Aubrey. “As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level, because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.”

RELEASE

Sounds like The Penguin will have his work cut out for him if he intends to conquer Gotham’s criminal underworld. But that makes for a compelling series. One will have DC fans gripped for weeks on end. And with Carmine Falcone’s daughter on hand to muddy the water, anything can happen in the narrows.

The forthcoming show was ordered straight to series following the success of Matt Reeves’ The Batman in March 2022. Colin Farrell will reprise his role from the film. Matt Reeves 6th & Idaho Productions, Dylan Clark Productions, and Warner Bros. Television are collaborating on the series and are eyeing an early 2023 production. So what say you Force friends? Are you excited about the upcoming Penguin series? Are you a fan of Colin Farrell’s incarnation of Gotham’s Pudgy Purveyor of Perfidy? Sound off below.
