Warner Bros. Discovery has finally appointed its creative dream team. James Gunn and Peter Safran will lead DC Studios to the promised land
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the top job at DC Films!
After months of speculation, the DC Universe finally has a new creative team at the helm. In the wake of the merger between Warner Bros and Discovery, DC Films has been searching for a new team to take the studio to the promised land. For a time, it seemed as if Walter Hamada would be immovable from his perch at the summit. But with a radical shake-up hitting at the very core of the previous regime, he recently stepped aside and the search for a new “Kevin Feige” began.
BLACK ADAM
And now, with the euphoria of Black Adam‘s success easing and fans having digested the news that Henry Cavill is STILL our Superman, the studio has cemented its future by announcing its most crucial appointment to date. After a comprehensive search, the studio has landed both writer/director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran to lead DC’s film, TV, and animation department. The pair will both hold the title of co-CEOs, overseeing the development of projects across the DC Universe brand. Gunn will head the creative side, while Safran will focus on the business and production side. Both will continue to develop, direct, and produce projects exclusively for the studio. And both will report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Moreover, to signify the bold new direction for the studio, DC Films has officially been rebranded as DC Studios. A bold statement indeed!
“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.”
“Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent,” the statement continued. “We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
A BRIGHTER FUTURE
The duo is expected to assume their new roles in November, with both now exclusive to the DC brand for at least the next four years. Meaning that once Gunn’s commitments to Marvel Studios on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The GOTG Holiday Special come to a close, his tenure in the MCU will officially draw to a close. But with both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker already under his belt, the transition to DC should be seamless. And with a fresh sandbox to play in that features Henry Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, the sky is the limit for the newly re-branded DC STUDIOS. Next up for DC Studios is Shazam! Fury of the Gods which hits multiplexes in March.
The age of heroes is back. And long may it reign!
