Check out our first look at Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena, Indy’s goddaughter in the upcoming final Indiana Jones adventure
Indiana Jones fans are eating well this week. Just hours after Empire Magazine published some outstanding first-look stills from the upcoming Indy 5, the media giant has upped the ante by giving us a sneak peek at Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena. Being cast as Indiana Jones’ Goddaughter is a tough ask, but Bridge is more than up for the challenge. Helena is described as a mysterious woman modeled after femme Fatales of the early 20th century. Making Bridge perfect for the role. And she will be keeping the obtainer of rare antiquities on his toes for his final adventure.
Indiana Jones 5 is set in 1969 amid the space race and finds Indy exposing covert Nazi sympathizers planted in America’s space program. What part Helena will play in proceedings remains to be seen. But Mangold has ensured that she will play a significant role in the adventure. Including several of the film’s pulse-pounding action sequences.
Empire‘s report reveals that the opening sequence of Indy 5 will feature a major flashback sequence. One boasting a de-aged Harrison Ford in what Mangold describes as a full-on George-and-Steven sequence. “I wanted the chance to dive into this kind of full-on George-and-Steven old picture and give the audience an adrenaline blast,” Mangold told Empire.
Mangold went on to reveal that the sequence aims to recapture the spirit of the original film. But with an Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade-esque flashback. Except this time around, the sequence will take us back to Indy in his Raiders of the Lost Ark prime. And for this adventure, Indy finds himself in a castle occupied by Nazis in 1944.
“And then we fall out, and you find yourself in 1969. So that the audience doesn’t experience the change between the ’40s and ’60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now.” Mangold said.
So, the question is how will Helena impact the direction of the film? Could she be a plant working for the CIA tasked with investigating the corruption at the heart of America’s space program? Could she be a double agent playing both sides off against each other? Or will she be an unwilling sidekick whisked away on a typical Indiana Jones adventure? Only time will tell. But with Mads Mikkelsen’s Nazi protagonist Voller on hand to offer the threat and Boyd Holbrook racing through the street of New York on a motorcycle, the sky is the limit for Indy’s last adventure. And we are 100% here for it!
Although this will be Indy’s swansong, the fact that we can all look forward to one last adventure is an enticing prospect. And the potential of him facing off against his old rivals makes it all the more tantalizing. So, strap yourselves in, dust off the fedora, and get ready for one helluva rollercoaster ride!
The currently untitled Indiana Jones 5 comes to UK cinemas on 30 June 2023.
