Look out Ray Harryhausen fans because Star Ace Toys is bringing Mighty Joe Young to the X-Plus Collection. After unveiling another amazing statue of the Homunculus from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, the toy giant has turned its attention to Ray’s giant ape. In the film, the usually peaceful Joe went on a rampage when he was attacked by a pride of lions. And the statue captures that iconic moment in stunning fashion.
THE STATUE
Joe is one of Ray Harryhausen’s finest creations. And now, Star Ace Toys has replicated his majesty in all his glory. The 13″ tall soft vinyl statue features the oversized gorilla battling a solitary lion. But as is always the case, Star Ace Toys have upped the ante by crafting a second “Deluxe” version. And that boasts the addition of another two polyresin lions to create a bigger, more striking display piece. Read on for the full details.
RAY HARRYHAUSEN’S MIGHTY JOE YOUNG
Ray Harryhausen got his start as an apprentice to the great stop-motion animator Willis O’Brien and the first major film young Ray worked on was Mighty Joe Young (1949). A 12-foot-tall giant gorilla is brought to Hollywood to help the young girl who raised him from a baby earn enough money to save her farm.
This new Star Ace statue features Joe as he fights for his life against wild lions. The soft vinyl statue is 34 cm tall and is sculpted by the renowned artisans at Kaibutsuya, each piece is meticulously hand-painted.
The Deluxe version comes with two more polyresin lions attacking Joe.
