The landscape of the DC Universe has changed. DC Studios hits the reset button and ousts Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel. James Gunn greenlights a new Superman movie with a young Clark Kent
Henry Cavill’s heralded return as Superman has been cut short in its infancy. After what was a monumental return in the finale of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, his return has been completely axed in the shakeup at DC Studios.
In recent weeks, James Gunn and Peter Safran have been busy mapping out the future of the new-look DC Universe. And boy, has the landscape changed. Wonder Woman 3 has reportedly been shelved, and Jason Momoa is rumored to be heading toward the Aquaman exit door. And only recently, it was widely and inaccurately reported that the studio was searching for a way to bring Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the wider DC Universe. But now, James Gunn has revealed new details that point to the DC Universe heading to a universal reset.
Ripping the band-aid off was always going to be painful. But James Gunn seems willing to endure the pain to propagate a brighter future for the DC Universe. And his first act as CEO is to oust Henry Cavill as Superman and get to work on a brand new iteration of the Man Of Steel. Taking to social media, Gunn announced that his new Superman movie will focus on a young Clark Kent, and therefore, will not be played by Henry Cavill.
Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

No sooner had James Gunn announced the heartbreaking news, than Henry Cavill confirmed the news via his official Instagram account. And his words are admirable. Heartwrenching, but admirable. Read the full statement below.
THE FUTURE OF DC
While this news is heartbreaking to millions of fans, as well as Henry Cavill, James Gunn has confirmed that the door remains open for Cavill to feature in some way in the future. Although it is difficult to see how. Gunn wrote: “we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about several exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
In the same Twitter thread, Gunn also ruled out Ben Affleck’s return as Batman after his role in The Flash. However, this isn’t the end of the road for Affleck in the DC Universe. Gunn confirmed that preliminary talks had been held between the studio and Affleck about the former caped crusader directing a DC movie – when the right project arises. Gunn wrote: “met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.’
Although this news may seem heartbreaking, one has to give credit to James Gunn for being upfront with the fans and taking the burden of responsibility for the big decisions. The box office response to Black Adam has been polarizing, and this has undoubtedly played a part in Gunn’s decision to hit the reset button. And while this appears to be the end of the road for the Snyder-Verse and its incarnation of DC’s biggest hitters, wiping the slate clean is the right decision to deliver the cohesive Universe we all crave.
Looking ahead, we can expect to see Jason Momoa depart as Aquaman and find a new role as Lobo. We should expect to see Gal Gadot retire from her role as Wonder Woman and watch the rise of a new Batman. And we can expect Ezra Miller to be replaced as The Flash and a new Man of Steel to become the leader of the DC Universe.
How the transition will take place remains to be seen. In the meantime, the final throws of the current DC Universe are heading to theatres in 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will potentially bookend Zachary Levi’s DC adventure. The Flash will serve as a flashpoint for the Snyder-Verse and close the book on that chapter. And finally, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will end Jason Momoa’s tenure as the King of the Seven Seas. After 2023, the landscape of the DC Universe will change. And it won’t feature Henry Cavill’s Superman or Ben Affleck’s Batman. Hell, it may not feature Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. Instead, we usher in a new age of heroes..,
It’s a brave and bold step…and a gamble that needs to pay off!
