Play It Cool, Guys ends in a satisfying way, delivering a final batch of entertaining episodes. With endearing characters and many laugh out loud moments, you can never get enough of this series.”

It has been a fun ride but the second cour of Play It Cool, Guys has finally come to an end and we are back with our last review for this series with the final four episodes.

A NEW FOUND FRIENDSHIP

Episodes 21 and 22 form their own little story arc with a focus on the relationship between Hayate and Motoharu. The previous episodes made it clear that Hayate was a big fan of Motoharu’s work and that he was even embarassed in front of him. He is *THAT* type of fan. Obviously, it is interesting to see more interactions between these two. At first, it goes from embarrassing to even more embarrassing with Hayate mistakenly drinking in Motoharu’s drink or claiming he deserves to be a rock in front of Motoharu’s feet. You get the picture. It is really funny.

However by the end of the two episodes, their relationship starts to take a friendlier turn. Hayate remains that awkward fan but there is definitely an evolution. They can have a proper conversation now. And to make things even better, they live in the same building but they didn’t know that. We love clumsy guys!

SUMMER FESTIVAL

Moreover, the opening scene of episode 21 is probably the funniest opening of the series. Indeed, Hayate calls Shun to tell him he is searching for his phone while he is actually calling him with it. I couldn’t stop laughing. It goes hard with the clumsy aspect of these characters. This series is comedy gold. That episode sets up the idea for the characters to all go to a Summer festival. And episode 22 is the characters going to the event. In fact, these two episodes could have formed a normal length episode.

Now that all the characters know each other and are friends, they can all hangout together. And them going to a Summer festival is the perfect slice of life moment. It is a group of people having a fun time.

TRIP TO THE BEACH

The final two episodes feature all the characters again along with Soma’s brother. They finally go to their beach trip that they talked about in previous episodes. And just like episodes 21 and 22, the final two episodes could have also formed a normal length episode. 24 is a direct continuation of 23. Obviously, this trip is a fun one, you get your usual dose of clumsiness.

Even though, everyone is present, the story focuses on Soma. We see a different side of the character, one who is more hesitant and not so sure of himself. Behind his nonchalance, he has some insecurities. It is definitely interesting to see this part of the character and learn more about him. He has done the covers for his friend’s CD but he is not sure which version to send. And even after Takayuki has helped him, Soma’s fears moves to what his friend’s answer will be. And the answer is not a positive one. Obviously, since it is Play it Cool, Guys, there is a fun twist. Soma had sent a picture of himself and Shun instead of the covers. It is a typical clumsy move. Soma’s friend actually likes the real covers.

The season ends with the characters watching fireworks after they mistakenly stumbled upon the event and taking a group picture. It ends in true clumsy fashion. A lighthearted and fun slice of life. After all, we all need “some cool, good looking and yet slightly awkward guys” in our lives, “our days are a lot more fun with them.”

VERDICT

Play It Cool, Guys ends in a satisfying way, delivering a final batch of entertaining episodes. With endearing characters and many laugh out loud moments, you can never get enough of this series.
