The Color Purple has already had a big-screen adaptation back in 1985 by Steven Spielberg. Based on the novel by Alice Walker, The film starred Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover. The movie was nominated for several Oscars but failed to win one. A stage musical of the novel opened on Broadway in 2005 and ran until 2008, and was revived again in 2015, gaining two Tony Awards in 2016. Indeed, every version of the property has been a resounding success.

Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones return to produce this version, along with the stage musical’s producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 1985 film.
