The beloved animated series Star Trek: Prodigy becomes the latest casualty of the media cost-cutting trend
Despite being renewed for a second season back in 2021, Star Trek: Prodigy has been canceled by Paramount+. The hit series made a huge impact as the first ever kid-centric animated Star Trek series and was a staple of both Paramount+ and Nickelodeon. But sadly, the streamer has joined its peers by cutting costs and whittling out tax write-offs. And although the series has a solid fanbase, Progidy is on the chopping block.
What’s more, the series is expected to be removed from the streamer within DAYS. As well as from Nicekelodeon’s programming schedule. Meaning fans who have been sleeping on the series need to get their warp core engaged fast! In addition to Prodigy, Paramount is also axing The Game, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, and Queen of the Universe. Variety broke the news late last night and grabbed a quote from the source.
AXE TREK
“The Game,” “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” and “Queen of the Universe” have all been canceled at Paramount+. In addition, all four shows are set to be removed from the streaming service in the coming days.
“The Paramount+ series ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,’ ‘Star Trek: Prodigy,’ ‘Queen of the Universe’ and ‘The Game’ have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service,” a Paramount+ spokesperson said. “We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programs, and we wish them all the best on their future endeavors.”
The cancellation of “Star Trek: Prodigy,” the first animated kids show in the “Star Trek” universe, comes despite the fact that the show was renewed for a second season back in 2021. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, although the show had aired on Nickelodeon in addition to Paramount+, it will not be returning to Nickelodeon either.
Those on the show will complete post-production on Season 2 and then CBS Studios will be free to shop it to other outlets.
THE FUTURE
As mentioned in Variety’s report, the highly-anticipated second season of Prodigy is already in post-production and is nearing completion. And although the series will not return to Paramount Plus or Nickelodeon, CBS is looking to ship the series to another outlet. And with the studio already enjoying a great working relationship with Prime Video, let’s hope the streamer steps in to rescue the series from disaster.
Prodigy aired its first season over two years, with 10 episodes starting in fall 2021 and a second ten late in 2022. The second 20-episode season of Prodigy was expected to debut on Paramount+ late in 2023, with ten episodes followed by a second set of ten episodes in late 2024.
PARAMOUNT+
Although the future of Star Trek: Prodigy looks bleak, fans waiting to binge the series will need to act fast to catch the show before its time expires. The deadline ends within days, so don’t sleep on the show to avoid disappointment. Either way, this is a sucker punch for Trekkies everywhere. It serves as a harsh reminder that our favorite shows are never guaranteed a future. No matter how popular they are. But with Strange New Worlds, Discovery, and Lower Decks all on hand to keep us entertained, the home of Star Trek is still Paramount+.
