Poor Things is a black comedy fantasy film by director Yorgos Lanthimos. It is based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. The story centers around a Victorian woman resurrected by a scientist who then runs away with a lawyer on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation. Emma Stone stars in the main role of Bella Baxter, the resurrected young woman. She is joined in the cast by Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, and Christopher Abbott. Margaret Qualley, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter, and Willem Dafoe. The film will open in the United States on December 8th and in the UK and Ireland on January 12th, 2024. The new trailer for the movie has been revealed.
THE PREMISE
From the filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Defoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
