“Percy Jackson and the Olympians delivers an exciting new episode as our heroes embark on their dangerous quest.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered last week with its first two episodes. Undoubtedly, it was a fantastic start and the satisfying adaptation that fans had been waiting for. The third episode releases tomorrow on Disney Plus!

ON A QUEST

The first two episodes were about introducing the characters and doing worldbuilding. Having them released together was a smart move. It literally acts as the first chapter in Percy’s adventures, setting the stage for what’s to come. The second episode ended with Percy Jackson being tasked with a dangerous quest. This leads us to today’s episode that is the beginning of the quest. It is a new chapter in Percy’s adventures. Now the story can really get going. He has to return Zeus’ stolen Master Bolt from the Underworld to stop an all-out war between the gods. In order to reach Hades’ territory, he must journey across America. This is not something he can do alone. So, he chooses Annabeth and Grover as his companions to help him.

Percy’s bond with Grover had been established in the first two episodes and he met Annabeth in the second episode. But, that first meeting with her didn’t turn out the way he thought. Now, we get to see them interacting as a team. For me, this is the heart of this episode. Indeed, it’s so interesting to see them to learn how to work together as a team. Grover is the member who tries to bring a bit of humour while Percy and Annabeth may seem to have opposing personalities. All of this is new for Percy. The stories he heard from his mother are true so he is adapting into what is his new normal.

Moreover, it wouldn’t be a dangerous quest without enemies. And right from the start, our heroes encounter some problems. This sets the tone for what to expect throughout the season as they journey across America. I am impressed by the visual effects of these monsters. They genuinely look realistic. I am glad that even though it’s not Star Wars or Marvel, this series received the same level of care from Disney. It deserves it, Percy Jackson is a popular book franchise.

As the title of this episode indicates our heroes visit the Garden Gnome Emporium. The titles of the episodes are actually derived from the titles of the chapters from the novel The Lightning Thief. If you have read the book, you know what that means, if not, you will discover when watching the episode. But, it’s a thrilling part of this quest. Rest assured, it has been brilliantly adapted!

CAST

The trio Percy, Grover and Annabeth really works well with this cast. They have a good on-screen dynamic. Last week, I was talking about how Walker Scobell was the right choice for Percy. Once again with this episode, he proves me right. He really embodies the character. And the same can be said for Leah Jeffries as Annabeth. After just three episodes, you really care for the characters and it’s thanks to this cast and the scripts that developed them. I also want to mention this week’s guest star – Jessica Parker Kennedy. She delivers a chilling performance. I love how she plays the ambiguity of her character.

VERDICT

Percy Jackson and the Olympians delivers an exciting new episode as our heroes embark on their dangerous quest. The interactions between Percy, Annabeth and Grover are the heart of this episode. It’s so interesting to see them to learn how to work together as a team.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians continues every week on Disney Plus.
