Daisy Ridley Opens Up About Rey Skywalker's Next Star Wars Adventure

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy offers an update on the Rey Skywalker Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie starring Daisy Ridley

2024 is kicking off on a high note. During a recent interview with CNN, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy touched upon the upcoming Rey Skywalker STAR WARS: New Jedi Order movie. The visionary filmmaker was announced as the director of Daisy Ridley’s monumental return to the galaxy far, far away back at STAR WARS CELEBRATION 2023. But until now, neither the star nor the director have offered any updates about the film. But all that is about to change.

While chatting with CNN’s Kristie Lu Stout, the director set the bar high by proclaiming  “We’re about to create something very special.” Moreover, she revealed her excitement at being the first woman to take up the challenge of shaping a story in the galaxy far, far away. But before we dust off the hyperdrive motivator, let’s explore the full quote below.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. And we’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

Rey Skywalker New Jedi Order Movie announced

RELEASE

While this update is welcome, fans are still in the dark about when we can expect to pile into cinemas to experience this new adventure. After all, a May 2026 release would be optimistic, to say the least. Especially as 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope. And what better way is there to commemorate this landmark event than by dropping Rey Skywalker’s return in glorious IMAX?

Also on the STAR WARS assembly line is Dave Filoni’s big screen climax of the Mandoverse and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi adventure. And of course, Shawn Levy is also working on a major motion picture. Throw in Rian Johnson’s long-gestating trilogy and Taika Waititi’s proposed adventure and we have a jam-packed slate of awesomeness from the galaxy far, far away to look forward to.

Either way, Rey Skywalker will be returning to our screens sooner rather than later. The character may have its detractors but with a blank canvas to enjoy and a well-prepared sandbox to play in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has all the tools to craft a monumental Star Wars adventure. And that is enough to have fans of the galaxy far, far away licking their lips in anticipation. And we are 100% here for it.

As always, we’ll update the site as soon as we hear more about this release. In the meantime, subscribe to our newsletter at the top of our homepage to stay up-to-date with all the latest Star Wars news and reviews from Future of the Force.
