Paramount Plus has renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fourth season, while Lower Decks has been canceled.
Paramount Plus has announced a major STAR TREK shakeup. The streamer has confirmed that STRANGE NEW WORLDS has been renewed for a fourth season. The flagship series will be returning for its third season in 2025. Still, with DISCOVERY and PICARD returning to drydock to be decommissioned, the streamer is eager to solidify the future of its beloved series. Production of season three is well underway in Toronto, and fans can get hyped for more adventures on the starship Enterprise.
Co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and executive producer Alex Kurtzman confirm in a statement:
“On behalf of the cast and crew of Strange New Worlds, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

LOWER DECKS
However, it has been announced that STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will be canceled after its fifth and final season, tempering the news. The beloved animated series will return later in the year for all-new episodes. However, fans will still have to accept that the show is about to embark on its final voyage and will be bidding farewell after the upcoming season.
Eager to ensure that the show will not meet the same fate as STAR TREK: PRODIGY and be removed from the streaming service, series creator Mike McMahan and franchise boss Alex Kurtzman addressed the cancellation.
To the fans,
We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.

TREK ON!
Although word of Lower Decks’ cancellation is heartwrenching, it is great to hear that the voyages of the Starship Enterprise will continue. STRANGE NEW WORLDS has solidified itself as the franchise flagship with its blend of classic and contemporary Trek, and with so many of the franchise’s other properties coming to an end, it is great to have a steady pair of hands at the helm.
It is worrying that several aspects of the franchise are being retired in rapid succession. After the retirement of PICARD and PRODIGY last year, and with DISCOVERY currently airing its final episodes, the franchise appears to be lacking in content. Paramount has announced that they plan to bring the franchise back to the big screen with an origin story set in the Kelvin timeline. There is also a fourth and final movie in the works that will feature Chris Pine’s crew, but it is still waiting for the cast to align their schedules due to their busy commitments.

BOLDLY GOING ON TV
A SECTION 31 streaming movie is well into development on the small screen, and a new STARFLEET ACADEMY series is being fast-tracked. Rumors of another PICARD project have been circulating, but Paramount has yet to set anything in stone. So, the franchise’s future appears to be running on life support for the foreseeable. But STAR TREK always bounces back and continues to venture beyond the final frontier.
Hopefully, the studio will continue its big announcements as 2024 continues. Until then, fans can look forward to one last ride with the Lower Decks crew. Beyond that, the Enterprise will continue to boldly go where no one has gone before…
