“This week’s episode of My Adventures with Superman is a captivating one putting the human characters at the centre as the heroes. It delivers big action and emotion setting the ground for the season finale.”

Last week’s episode of My Adventures with Superman ended on a dark note with a shocking twist, so it surely has felt like an extremely long week to finally know what happens next! A new episode premieres this Saturday on Adult Swim and on Max the following day.

FIGHTING FOR CLARK KENT

With Brainiac controlling Clark’s mind, the situation is quite desperate. Though despite the odds, Lois Lane doesn’t give up. It just makes sense that she is the one trying to save Clark Kent. She is the one who loves him more than anything. So, she fights with the power of love. With a character as strong as Superman, the only way to bring him back is to appeal to his humanity. That’s not only clever storytelling but a story choice that brings the biggest emotional impact to the story and the characters.

This episode has the same structure as last week’s episode switching between moments inside of a simulation/Clark’s mind and what is going on for the other characters. These two episodes mirror each other. In the first one, Brainiac tries to corrupt Clark’s mind while in the second one, Lois tries to free Clark’s mind. Both Brainiac and Lois struggle to reach their goal. Watching these episodes back-to-back makes for an even more compelling experience. I honestly believe they should have released them together.

EARTH IN DANGER

Meanwhile, Kara and Jimmy have to prevent Brainiac’s invasion on Earth. This is not an easy mission either. Indeed, Amanda Waller is controlling Metropolis now with the help of Lex Luthor. Thus, our heroes are facing double trouble – Brainiac’s upcoming invasion and Waller. Without Clark, Kara feels defeatist while Jimmy still has the desire to fight and figure out a solution to resolve all of this. It’s quite interesting to see the “ordinary” human characters being the ones who keep fighting. They motivate the superheroes. It’s usually the contrary, the superheroes inspire us.

I really like the situation being reversed. Sometimes, even the superheroes do need inspiration. Plus, it makes characters like Jimmy and Lois superheroes in their own way. Not all heroes wear cape, sometimes they can be ordinary people who step up to do the right thing. As Batman said to Gordon in The Dark Knight Rises – “A hero can be anyone.” This episode is also very much about Jimmy giving Kara the will to fight again and showing her that not all hope is lost. It definitely sets the ground for what is likely to be an epic finale.

VERDICT

This week’s episode of My Adventures with Superman is a captivating one putting the human characters at the centre as the heroes. It delivers big action and emotion setting the ground for the season finale.

A new episode of My Adventures with Superman season 2 premieres this Saturday on Adult Swim and on Max the next day.
