James Gunn Confirms Wonder Woman is in Active Development at DC Studios

A New Wonder Woman Movie is in Active Development at DC Studios

Look out, Wonder Woman fans, because James Gunn has confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is moving ahead at DC Studios.

With Superman almost ready to meet the world next month, DC Studios head honcho James Gunn has a ton on his plate. Aside from his duties on Superman, the director is busy adding the finishing touches to Peacemaker Season 2. Beyond that, he’s overseeing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, and Swamp Thing, to name but a few. But the wheel of comic book heroes continues to turn, and the visionary director is already lining up the next wave of heroes set to swoop into his revamped DC Universe.

Yesterday, EW released several new images from Gunn’s Superman that delivered a closer look at David Corenswet in action. However, flying under the radar was a tidbit of information that will send fans of the DCU into a state of delirium. During his chat with EW, Gunn announced that a new Wonder Woman movie is already in active development at DC Studios. “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman‘s being written right now,” Gunn said about giving the Themyscira Warrior a new feature film.

DIANA PRINCE RETURNS

Although Gunn failed to provide further details aside from confirming that the movie would not conflict with his planned HBO/Max series, Paradise Lost, this is welcome news. Wonder Woman’s future in the DCU was uncertain after Patty Jenkins’ third solo movie was shelved and DC hit the reset button. But now, WW fans can look forward to welcoming Diana Prince back into the fold alongside her heroic counterparts.

Given the changes happening in the DC landscape, we should all be prepared for the possibility that some characters will be recast. So far, James Gunn has cast new talent in nearly every role, which suggests that Gal Gadot’s time as the daughter of Themyscira may be coming to an end. Gadot enjoyed a highly successful run, with her first solo film surpassing expectations at the box office, grossing $823 million worldwide. However, the sequel did not perform as well, earning only $169.6 million, which was considered disappointing by audience standards.

THE FUTURE

Thankfully, the new DC Universe represents a fresh start for the character. With a new Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman now moving along the assembly line, the holy trinity of DC is coming together. Under Gunn’s watchful eye and directorial vision, the franchise appears to be moving in the right direction, so fans can look forward to something very special when these three meet on the big screen once again.

But who will be cast as Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe? Will Gal Gadot make an unexpected return?  Currently, popular fan casting has suggested Adria Arjona, known for her role in “Star Wars: Andor,” for the part. However, James Gunn will have the final decision. Given his successful track record with Superman, fans can feel confident that the DC Universe is in good hands.

James Gunn’s Superman will fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
