The Dinosaurs Claim Victory as Jurassic World Rebirth Dominates the Weekend Box Office

Life found a way to make the dinosaurs of Jurassic World Rebirth roar to the top of the global box office with a colossal $318.3m haul.

Gareth Edwards’ colossal dinosaur sequel, Jurassic World: Rebirth, has smashed all expectations to dominate the global box office in its opening weekend. The blockbuster movie hit cinema screens last Wednesday, and in the days that followed, the film was a roaring success with fans. Although some critics (not us, we loved the movie) panned the film, Jurassic fans were more than ready to return to the island to meet the T-Rex and Distortus Rex.

With fans everywhere flocking to the movies to watch the monster thriller, the film went on to haul in an impressive five-day total of $147 million. When added to the total ticket sales worldwide, the film concluded its weekend run with a ferocious total of $318.3 million.

A JURASSIC CLASSIC

It seems fans aren’t ready to abandon the genetically engineered dinosaurs or their mutant cousins just yet. Given the global footfall, Universal Pictures will undoubtedly be fast-tracking a sequel now. So, fans will be hoping to see Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali all return for another round of prehistoric action.

In our FOUR-STAR movie review, I said, “Jurassic World: Rebirth is absolutely phenomenal. Gareth Edwards has channeled his inner Spielberg to craft a loving tribute to Jurassic Park and Jaws. Although some of the CGI is questionable at times, the film delivers the ultimate Mosasaurus and T. Rex sequences. It takes the franchise back to basics and delivers everything a Jurassic fan could ask for. It’s a Jurassic classic! Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack brings back the best of John Williams while crafting a new soundscape, and every member of the cast delivers. This is the sequel we’ve been waiting for. The age of dinosaurs is back! Life found a way!

Gareth Edwards’s love of Steven Spielberg’s filmography is well-known, and here he captures the director’s quintessential style to deliver the most legitimate sequel to the landmark original film in decades. Rebirth feels like a natural successor to the original JP trilogy. While it does reference Colin Trevorrow’s trilogy, it intentionally avoids focusing on its characters and storylines, opting instead to return the series to its roots.” Read our full review here.

RELEASE

Either way you shake it, the Jurassic franchise is back with a bang. Rebirth has given the franchise new legs, and the weekend box office is ensuring the film soars above its competition. But where could the sequel take Zora Bennett, Doctor Henry Loomis, and Duncan Kincaid? Will the nefarious genetics company ParkerGenix play a role despite the conclusion to Martin Krebs’ storyline? All will be revealed in time.

For now, Jurassic World: Rebirth will bask in the limelight. However, this week will see the big-screen premiere of James Gunn’s Superman, which is expected to gross over $100 million in its first three days. So, will the dinosaurs be able to fend off the Man of Steel? Only the hard-working cinemagoers will decide, but we’ll be here to bring you the results.
