“Wednesday is back and it’s better than ever. The first part of the sophomore season relies more on the horror genre and delivers an intriguing mystery. It takes what worked in season 1 and improves it.”
Three years ago, Tim Burton’s take on the Addams Family debuted on Netflix. And now, the wait is finally over. Wednesday is back for season 2. Part 1 releases today, and Part 2 on September 3 on Netflix. Each part is composed of 4 episodes. So was it worth the wait?
STORY

Tim Burton working on an Addams Family project felt like fate. However, season 1 of Wednesday didn’t exactly hit the mark, but it was an entertaining series. So, there was room to improve for this sophomore season. It took three years to get new episodes, but it was worth the wait. Part 1 of season 2 doesn’t disappoint. Indeed, Wednesday is back and it is better than ever. It takes what worked in season 1 and improves it. The series relies more on the supernatural horror and mystery genres. At times, it’s reminiscent of Sleepy Hollow. While at the same time, it continues to bring the right amount of dark comedy. All these genres mixed deliver outstanding results.
Once again, Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy for a new year at school, but for a new mystery as well. The story is intriguing with surprising twists and turns that you won’t see coming. This mystery will keep you guessing. The other characters at Nevermore have their subplots too. A lot is happening with just four episodes.
On top of that, the rest of the Addams family is a lot more present this time, and the writers have found the right way to keep them in the plot and further develop the relationship they have with their children. Even if the series is about Wednesday, it’s essential to have her family stick around, especially with this talented cast. The decision to cut season 2 in two parts makes sense story wise. These first four episodes form their story arc while also informing you where the story is going in the next four episodes.
CAST

Furthermore, Jenna Ortega continues to shine as the titular character. This is what you call perfect casting. Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Gomez and Morticia are just the right fit for these characters. And this time, they have more interactions with Jenna, which is delightful to watch! The on-screen chemistry for the Addams family is precisely what you want for them. It’s a weird and yet loving and complex chemistry. Fred Armisen returns as Uncle Fester, and you can’t get enough of his delirium. We are once again reminded that everyone in the Addams family was well cast.
A new season also means new characters. Steve Buscemi feels oddly at home as the new headmaster of Nevermore. You never know his character’s true intentions, Buscemi cleverly plays with the ambiguity. Thandiwe Newton is another nice addition to the cast, and so is Christopher Lloyd!
VISUALS AND OPENING CREDITS

It’s a new season, so it has new opening credits. Unlike other series, it’s not featured in every episode; it’s only in the first and last one of part 1. This one is similar in style to the one from season 1, but incorporates elements from what is happening this season. And it once again uses the great theme Danny Elfman created for the character.
Moreover, Tim Burton’s visual style and influence are felt even more throughout these new episodes. He directed the first and last one. The colour palette, the gothic and horror atmosphere, the designs, it’s all very much Burton-esque. One of the episodes even includes an animated sequence that feels like it could have been taken from Frankenweenie.
VERDICT
Wednesday is back and it’s better than ever. The first part of the sophomore season relies more on the horror genre and delivers an intriguing mystery. It takes what worked in season 1 and improves it. This time, Tim Burton’s style is felt more throughout the episodes, and the rest of the Addams family finally has the screen time they deserve. Jenna Ortega is still perfect as the titular character.
