Get ready to reunite with Vin Diesel and Michael Caine because Lionsgate is fast-tracking a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter.
It’s been ten years since our last hunt, but that hasn’t stopped Lionsgate from greenlighting a sequel to Vin Diesel’s The Last Witch Hunter. The 2015 horror flick grossed $130 million at the worldwide box office and has enjoyed a sensational run on home media in the years that followed. In fact, the film has amassed a cult following on streaming platforms, becoming one of the five most-viewed movies on Netflix. But now, with the IP proving its staying power with audiences, the studio is eager to reignite the witch-hunting flame with a fresh sequel.
According to Deadline, Vin Diesel has already signed on to reprise his role as Kaulder, the immortal Witch Hunter. However, in a surprising twist, the studio is in negotiations with Michael Caine, a move that will see the screen legend emerge from retirement to reprise his role as Dolan. Lionsgate is collaborating with Diesel’s One Race Films to produce the film.

A SUCCESSFUL HUNT
The studio plans to produce the sequel on a reasonable budget, using modern technology that has allowed other studios to create major sci-fi hits with lower budgets. This strategy has allowed studios like Lucasfilm to develop Star Wars projects for Disney+ at a fraction of the cost. Using technology like the Volume lessens the need for location shoots and travel costs, which only reduces the impact on the overall budget. So, should Lionsgate opt to utilize a similar strategy, the film could be made on a modest budget with reasonably impressive special effects. And that is a recipe for success.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, said of the move: “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and re-watch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

RELEASE
From the sounds of it, both Vin Diesel and the studio are aiming high with The Last Witch Hunter sequel. The advancements in technology should enable them to create a new sandbox that has the potential for lasting appeal over the decades. If the screenplay can capture the same magic and atmosphere as the previous installment, the sequel could serve as a remarkable launchpad for a successful franchise. In a time when The Conjuring can still dominate the global box office and dinosaurs still reign supreme during the summer season, there is more than enough room for Vin Diesel’s witch hunter to rise again.
With a punchy script, a solid ensemble cast, and the potential return of Michael Caine, the sequel has the makings of an instant classic. So let’s hope everything aligns to deliver a sensational cinematic spectacle.
