STORY

Black Rabbit follows two brothers, Jake Friedken (Jude Law), the owner of a successful restaurant in New York, and Vince (Jason Bateman), a troubled man. Jake’s life takes a turn when his brother comes back to the business. His return also brings serious problems that threaten everything. This series is a character study of these two brothers who share an unbelievably strong bond. It’s a family story. But it’s this bond that sends them into a downward spiral of self-destruction. Getting out of trouble is far from easy, but for these two, it’s even more difficult. Every time, they seem to reach the light at the end of the tunnel, there’s something happening. And it’s something that one or the other is more or less responsible for.

The dynamic between the two brothers is quite compelling. Jake would do anything for his brother while also looking after his own interests. And Vince does his best to help him. Except that by coming back, he brings troubles, and chaos ensues. It’s a dysfunctional family, not just their relationship, but the relationship they have with the whole family. Indeed, it’s something the series explores through flashbacks and the interactions Vince has with the rest of his family. They can’t help going down further; it’s uncontrollable.

This creates a riveting ride that makes your heart race. There’s always something happening, and it intensifies as the story unfolds. It truly goes crescendo. Undoubtedly, it’s the type of series you want to binge-watch. Once you start, you’ll watch the eight episodes in one go. It’s a story that makes you want to see what happens next, what these brothers will do to bring more trouble to themselves, or if they can even escape what’s going on. Black Rabbit is a compelling thriller and a poignant human drama.

CAST

Furthermore, Jason Bateman and Jude Law both deliver exceptional performances. Watching them act together, they make you believe their characters are brothers. They have great on-screen chemistry. Forrest Weber and Chris Coy also form a great duo. It’s a different dynamic as they’re a duo of criminals. They play the type of annoying characters, and they’re so good at it.

There is an Ozark reunion behind the scenes. Indeed, Bateman’s former co-star Laura Linney is directing some episodes. Bateman himself is also back in the director’s chair; he previously won an Emmy as a director on Ozark.

VERDICT

Black Rabbit is a riveting ride that makes your heart race, and it’s also a moving human drama about two brothers. Jason Bateman and Jude Law deliver exceptional performances and have great on-screen chemistry as brothers.

Black Rabbit premieres on September 18th on Netflix.
