PREMISE
From award-winning writer-director Mona Fastvold (The World to Come, The Brutalist) comes the extraordinary true legend of Ann Lee, founder of the devotional sect known as the Shakers. Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried stars as the Shaker’s irrepressible leader, who preached gender and social equality. She was revered by her followers. The Testament of Ann Lee captures the ecstasy and torment of her quest to build a utopia. It features more than a dozen traditional Shaker hymns reimagined as rapturous movements. The choreography is by Celia Rowlson-Hall (Vox Lux) with original songs & score by Academy Award winner Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist).
BEHIND THE SCENES
Written by Fastvold and Academy Award nominee Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), producers include Andrew Morrison (The Brutalist), Joshua Horsfield (The Silent Twins), Viktória Petrányi (The Brutalist), Fastvold, Corbet, Gregory Jankilevitsch (Woman of…), Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska (The Silent Twins), Lillian LaSalle (Brooklyn, Minnesota), and Mark Lampert (The Brutalist).
OUR LFF REVIEWS
We recently saw the film at the 69th BFI London Film Festival. While some critics who saw the film praised it, we sadly found it lacking. Our editor, Phil Roberts, had this to say:
Sadly, Mona Fastvol’s #TheTestamentOfAnnLee didn’t resonate with me.
Although the film crafts a brilliant historical setting, the jarring religious musical numbers and oddly choreographed worshipping didn’t land. Amanda Seyfried performs well, but even she can’t salvage this disaster. #LFF
Finally, I had this to say about the film:
#TheTestamentOfAnnLee is an infuriating film that is neither dramatic or enlightening.
When you’ve got a film that spends more time thinking it’s a musical instead of a true tale or dramatic story, you know you’re in trouble.
Not for me, sadly
