Her best life. His worst nightmare.

What’s more satisfying than seeing a male chauvinist getting a taste of his own medicine? Who doesn’t like seeing him get his much-needed comeuppance? And who cheers when we watch him getting taken down a peg or two, to see the error of his ways, or end up with nothing? The premise has been around for years now in movies of varying quality. Now, Netflix has thrown its hat into the ring. Their upcoming romantic comedy, Ladies First, premieres on May 22nd.

In this film, a male chauvinist is thrown into an alternate world where society’s power dynamics are completely reversed. The film has an incredible cast comprising Sacha Baron Cohen, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Emily Mortimer, Charles Dance, Fiona Shaw, Tom Davis, and Kathryn Hunter. The official trailer for the film has debuted today. Beware, strong language and sexual innuendos abound!

THE PREMISE

A ladies’ man finds his life upended when he wakes up in a parallel world dominated by women. With the rules of engagement changed, he faces off against a fiery female colleague in a playful satire that explores what happens when the script gets flipped.

Thea Sharrock, who directed the film, is known for Wicked Little Letters, a movie I absolutely adored. This new project draws loose inspiration from the 2018 French film I Am Not an Easy Man, directed by Éléonore Pourriat. Katie Silberman, Cinco Paul, and Natalie Krinsky have adapted it into this English-language version, while Liza Chasin, Eleonore Dailly, and Edouard de Lachomette are the producers.

THOUGHTS

Ok, I’m in! The film looks to be a hilarious, cringingly funny reversal of the battle of the sexes. As a male, it tickles me with some of the references that are abundant during the trailer, especially the testicle bra! Women will laugh, cheer, and punch the air with delight as they see the roles reversed, placing them in a position of dominance in the world. Meanwhile, men will have to take a deep breath as they confront how the movie portrays their roles and treatment. Do we males deserve this? Of course we do! After years of seeing the sexist attitude that many have towards women, it is brilliant to see them finally get a taste of their own medicine.
