It’s shaping up to be yet another great year for horror movies. After 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the upcoming Cold Storage, Scream 7, The Bride!, and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, plus Osgood Perkins’ The Young People coming later this year, we could be in for a bumper and scary time. Also coming this March is Ian Tuason’s directorial debut with the horror film, Undertone. The story of the film follows the host of a popular paranormal podcast who becomes haunted by terrifying recordings that are mysteriously sent to her. While the cast includes Nina Kiri, Adam DiMarco, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, and Jeff Yung, only Kiri appears on screen. The horror comes through a series of unsettling audio recordings. As a result, this gives the film a terrifying soundscape that will send chills down the audience’s spine. The new trailer has emerged today. Dare you listen?
THE PREMISE
The film stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a woman who hosts a paranormal podcast with her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco), where she is the skeptic to his believer; after moving back home to become caregiver to her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), she is sent recordings of a married couple experiencing paranormal noises in their home, drawing Evy into fear and paranoia
Haven’t they ever heard of the mute button? Obviously not! From the look of the new trailer, the film will be a completely creepy, scary movie that could be a standout. As a horror movie fan, it creeped me out a bit, and that’s just the trailer. Instead of the ‘found footage’ genre, which, to be honest, has been done to death (pun intended), we have the ‘found audio’ genre instead. And that’s what interests me about the film. Instead of what you see or think you will see, it is what you will hear that scares us. And that could make the film something special.
THE NEW POSTER
Supernatural movies are amongst my favourites of the horror genre. It isn’t always the slasher movies, zombies, creature features, or the like that grab my attention. Films like this, alongside Poltergeist, The Exorcist, the 1982 TV film Don’t Go to Sleep, and a film from years ago called Ruby, are ones I enjoy sitting back and watching. While this chapter of the genre isn’t new, it often gets overshadowed by slasher movies. The supernatural genre deserves a boost, and this film could be exactly what it needs.
Undertone will demand to be heard as well as seen when it opens on March 13th.
