Get ready to return to the Old West, because Matt Dillon has joined the cast of the MGM+ western reimagining, The Magnificent Seven.
Mount up and get ready to ride, because Matt Dillon has joined the cast of the new adaptation of The Magnificent Seven from MGM+. Dillon, who also serves as an executive producer, will reprise the iconic role of Chris Adams, originally played by Yul Brynner, who becomes the leader of seven gunslingers who sign onto the task of protecting a group of innocent villagers from a mercenary land baron hellbent on stealing their land. Stoic, steady under pressure, and with an unflinching gaze that does most of the talking for him, Chris has no patience for hypocrisy or cruelty and holds fast to a quiet moral code rooted in fairness and restraint.
In the original classic film, seven skilled mercenaries are hired by a community to defend them against a villainous land baron and his gang of thugs. But when chaos erupts, the team must confront the obvious issue: Is using violence acceptable to protect people whose faith is rooted in non-violence? No matter which side of the fence you find yourself on, the film was an instant classic and propagated a string of remakes and imitations, all trying to recapture the magic of the original. But until now, none have succeeded.

A NEW VISION
So, who has the studio appointed to oversee this bold new adaptation? The proposed eight-episode drama series hails from acclaimed writer Tim Kring (Heroes, Touch), who will serve as writer and executive producer, alongside executive producer Donald De Line, who recently completed work on the Billy the Kid series. Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman also serve as executive producers on the project. The series is produced by MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios with production targeted to begin in June 2026.
But what can we expect from the show? Will it be another straight remake spread across eight thrilling episodes? Or does the studio have a different vision in mind? If the synopsis is any indication, we should expect a deep dive into the characters, designed to add greater depth to their personas than ever before.
SYNOPSIS
Set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, The Magnificent Seven is a reimagining of the classic Western tale. After a peaceful Quaker village is massacred by mercenaries working for a greedy and ruthless land baron trying to force them off the land he covets, seven gifted but flawed mercenaries are hired by the community to protect them from the land baron’s hired guns. But as the team embeds itself in the community, preparing to defend them against overwhelming odds, they are all forced to grapple with an essential question: is the use of violence acceptable to defend a people whose faith is based on non-violence? The series takes a deep dive into the stories behind each of the Seven; what’s at stake for them, and why they choose to take on this mission. Like the original, this updated take on the classic story explores themes of honor, sacrifice and redemption, focusing on morality, faith, and the cost of courage.
“Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role,” said Michael Wright, global head of MGM+. “His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our reimagining of The Magnificent Seven. This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression—and Matt’s performance will be at the heart of that story.”

RELEASE
Sadly, at this stage, it is too early for the studio to announce any additional casting for the show. But given that the previous remake featured Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington, and Vincent D’Onofrio, stars will flock to this title, so expect some incredible talent to join Matt Dillon in the Old West. What’s more, with the team behind Billy the Kid bringing this series to the screen, we should expect some epic production value. MGM+ never creates these shows by halves. Recent productions like Billy the Kid, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and Robin Hood have all been landmark pieces of television gold, so The Magnificent Seven will deliver the mother of all adventures when it finally arrives on our screens.
The Magnificent Seven is aiming to enter production in Calgary in June 2026. Exciting times ahead!
