In honour of the film’s 40th anniversary, Columbia Pictures is inviting audiences to experience Rob Reiner’s classic, Stand By Me, on the big screen again.
Let me let you in on a little secret. Do you know how to tell if you’re getting old? When films or songs that you love and cherish are re-released to celebrate their 40th anniversary, and you remember the first time you saw the movie or heard the song. Can you believe that the classic movie Stand By Me celebrates its 40th anniversary this year? Possibly the late Rob Reiner’s finest film reaches the milestone this year. Columbia Pictures is celebrating by re-releasing the film in theaters for a one-week engagement starting on March 27th. Currently, this event is only confirmed for locations in the United States. However, we can expect other countries to be able to go and see the film again, where it belongs.
For those who have yet to experience the film, now is the perfect time to watch what many of us went to the movies and saw back in 1986. Four 12-year-old boys searching for the body of a missing teenager discover far more than they expected. The film stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland. It is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella The Body. The film is set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon, in 1959. Additionally, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. It also earned two Golden Globes for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Director for Rob Reiner.
THE PREMISE
In a treehouse on the edge of Castle Rock, a small, woodsy town in Oregon, a budding 12-year-old writer named Gordie LaChance (Wil Wheaton) prepares to embark on an extraordinary journey—one that will change his life forever. When his best friend Vern (Jerry O’Connell) overhears his older brother discussing the discovery of a dead body in the woods, Gordie and his friends set out in hopes of becoming local heroes.
Joined by the tough but compassionate Chris (River Phoenix) and the reckless daredevil Teddy (Corey Feldman), the boys’ innocent adventure quickly becomes a profound odyssey of self-discovery. As they venture deeper into the forest, Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern are tested in ways they never imagined. Moreover, they must confront fear, loss, and the realities of growing up.

For those who haven’t seen the film, I strongly urge you to check it out. The film is an all-time, bona fide classic. It is a coming-of-age story that deserved its box office success and should have rightfully walked away with several awards. It is timeless, it is moving, it is funny, and it is something that you’ll never forget. Plus, it also utilises the classic Ben E. King song of the same name over the end credits.
