MUBI has announced the theatrical release date for The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford, the debut feature from writer-director Sean Robert Dunn. Starring Peter Mullan, this film dives into a darkly comic exploration of grief, identity, and cultural legacy. It is set against the backdrop of rural Scotland. Moviegoers in the UK can catch The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford in cinemas starting on 12 June 2026.
The film had its UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival, marking a significant homecoming for the film and its creative team. This followed its world premiere at the 2026 Rotterdam Film Festival, where it screened in the Big Screen Competition.

THE PREMISE
The film follows Kenneth McKay (Mullan), a recent widower and passionate tour guide at a quaint visitor center in the small town of Arberloch. The center celebrates his alleged ancestor, the notable Enlightenment figure Sir Douglas Weatherford. When a popular fantasy TV show chooses Arberloch as a filming location, the local fame of Sir Douglas faces a serious threat from this pop culture sensation. In response, Kenneth is determined to protect his ancestor’s legacy. Therefore, he dives headfirst into this challenge and is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the memory of Sir Douglas.
Anchored by a nuanced, standout performance by Peter Mullan. The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford is the story of a man struggling to find his place in the contemporary world. The film explores themes of identity and loss through a tender, eccentric, and quintessentially British lens.
