The Mandalorian And Grogu Box Office Drops 69% On Week 2

The Force struggles to keep up the momentum as The Mandalorian and Grogu’s audience slips by 69%

After ten days of release, The Mandalorian and Grogu’s audience attendance has dropped significantly. Despite being a hit with fans, casual cinemagoers aren’t feeling the Force with Din Djarin and his adorable sidekick. The film’s audience dropped by an eye-watering 69% in its second week of release. Jon Favreau’s brainchild could only muster enough revenue to secure the third spot at the box office, coming in behind Backrooms and Obsession, respectively.

To date, the film has taken $137,368,604 at the domestic box office. Added to the International gross of $109,200,000, this brings the Worldwide total to $246,568,604. The current data suggests the film will complete its run well below the haul of Solo: A Star Wars Story. That film grossed $392,924,807. What’s more concerning is the sudden drop in footfall. Despite strong word-of-mouth, the film only managed to draw $25 million in its second week. This represents a 69% drop in audience attendance.

REVIEWS

Despite the sharp drop in support, we had a blast with the film. In his FIVE-STAR REVIEW, Thomas Storai said: “The Mandalorian and Grogu brings back Star Wars to the big screen in the most satisfying way. This action-packed and compelling film tells a self-contained story with a strong focus on its characters. It is a classic Star Wars adventure that captures the spirit of A New Hope and Solo: A Star Wars Story. This is the film that best recaptures the magic of the Original Trilogy. It’s also a visually stunning film that masterfully balances practical effects with CGI, and it’s meant to be seen on a big screen. This film serves as a perfect entry point to the saga for a new generation of fans while also rewarding longtime fans, resulting in a sensational ride.” Read his full review here.

And in my FOUR-STAR REVIEW, I said: “The Mandalorian and Grogu is an absolute blast. Although it may not be the spectacle we hoped for, it delivers buckets of Star Wars action, fun, iconography, and visual splendor. With its glorious world-building, epic action, throwbacks to the classics, and light-hearted family fun, it’s a welcome return to the big screen for Star Wars. This is the way…to have a blast at the movies!” Read my thoughts here.

THE FUTURE

Of course, while the box office takings are concerning, it is far too early for Star Wars to wave the white flag and declare the film a flop. The film has plenty of legroom to maneuver as we near the summer season. Kids are almost ready to break up and fill their long days off in multiplexes. So, the box office may recover, especially with a dedicated fanbase yearning for the film to succeed. Failing that, the film’s debut on Disney+ later this year will also bolster the coffers. So don’t write off The Mandalorian and Grogu just yet!
