For those of us who have been lucky enough to read Kazuo Ishiguro’s book, Klara And The Sun, we know what would lie in store. If a movie adaptation of the 2021 science fiction novel is made, it will vividly portray a dystopian future. In this future, scientists genetically engineer children to possess enhanced academic abilities. The story centers on Klara, an artificial friend (AF), and her friend Josie. Josie chooses Klara to live with her and her mother in a remote prairie region. The novel was longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize, highlighting its impact and relevance. The book follows the relationship between the pair. Additionally, it climaxes in an ending we don’t see coming.
Oscar-winning writer/ director Taika Waititi is bringing the novel to the screen. Keeping the novel’s title, Waititi’s adaptation features Jenna Ortega as Klara, Mia Tharia as Josie, and Amy Adams as Josie’s mother. Waititi also co-wrote the screenplay for the film alongside Dahvi Waller. The official trailer for the film has emerged from the sunlight. Put on your sunshades and take a look below.

THE PREMISE
Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize-winner Kazuo Ishiguro and written and directed by Academy-Award winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams), and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.
The film is produced by David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Taika Waititi, while Gary Barber, Alex G. Scott, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Kazuo Ishiguro are the executive producers.
Klara And The Sun will be in cinemas later this year.
