The 70th BFI London Film Festival is almost upon us. The event begins on 7 October. Among the films showing will be Carol Morley’s 7 Miles Out. The film features Lucy Halliday, Aiden Gillen, and Gemma Whelan. Today, the festival revealed the public screening dates for the film. THE PREMISE
7 MILES OUT, acclaimed writer/director Carol Morley’s (The Falling, Dreams of a Life) deeply personal and moving coming-of-age film, follows Ann (Lucy Halliday, Blue Jean, The Testaments). Ann is a young woman growing up on the fringes of Manchester’s music scene. After the death of her father, she navigates first love, friendship, and grief against the backdrop of Joy Division and The Haçienda. In this way, she finds her own voice through music and creativity. Adapted from Morley’s celebrated semi-autobiographical novel, 7 MILES OUT is an intimate portrait of hope, love, and self-discovery. The film will have its World Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. There, it will screen in Official Competition.
Ann finds herself on unstable ground after the death of her father. Growing up in a boarding house in Stockport with her mum, her obsession with music and her friendship with Hel are everything. But when local band Joy Division’s frontman Ian Curtis kills himself and Hel leaves town, everything collapses. Ann is drawn to alcohol and casual sex. But a magical rekindling of the past and a rediscovered cassette tape opens a door to a new beginning.
FILMED ON LOCATION
Filmed entirely on location in Stockport, Greater Manchester, the film captures the atmosphere of the 1970s and ’80s through the lens of legendary cinematographer Agnès Godard (The Falling, Beau Travail) and Morley’s frequent collaborator. Unfolding over seven years, 7 MILES OUT brings an evocative sense of place to Ann’s journey. Immersing us in a pivotal period of youth, music, and cultural change.

7 MILES OUT will be released in UK and Irish cinemas in 2027.
