MUBI has unveiled the official trailer for Eleanor Coppola’s behind-the-scenes documentary, Making Marie Antoinette.
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, is pleased to share the official trailer for Making Marie Antoinette. This follows its UK premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival last night. The intimate feature-length documentary is set to hit cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 23 October 2026. It will also stream exclusively on MUBI from 6 November 2026.
Eleanor Coppola, an acclaimed filmmaker, tells the story in her documentary. Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley, and Sofia Coppola produced the film. OUR FILMS (a Mediawan company), Mediawan Rights, and Entourage Pictures financed the film. Additionally, the film received support from CHANEL.
ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY
In 2005, Sofia Coppola made her third feature film, Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, at the Palace of Versailles. This was the first production ever to have been granted permission. Her mother, acclaimed documentarian Eleanor Coppola, accompanied her on set and shot about eighty hours of footage. She focused on her daughter’s journey of making the film. This year, to mark the 20th anniversary of Marie Antoinette‘s release and fulfill her mother’s wishes, Coppola reviewed the unseen footage. Making Marie Antoinette shows the craftsmanship that went into the film and legendary costume designer Milena Canonero at work. Furthermore, it shows what it was like to be a young female director at that time. The result is a fascinating look at how this landmark film came together. It is also an unexpectedly intimate family portrait.
Aaron Matthews edited the footage, with input from Eleanor’s good friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird. In the film, Academy Award nominee Diane Lane voices Eleanor Coppola, reading passages from Eleanor’s journals in which she discusses her experiences on set and reflects on her relationship with her daughter.
SOFIA COPPOLA
Sofia Coppola said:
“My mother and I started going through her footage during lockdown. It was always her wish to make what she shot into a feature length documentary. She was on set as a filmmaker and also my mother, so I found it so moving to go back through the material and to see our shoot through her eyes.”
Additionally, in the US and Canada only, MUBI will release the new 4K restoration of Marie Antoinette in theatres and streaming on MUBI from 23 October. Making Marie Antoinette will be available on MUBI globally from 6 November.
Making Marie Antoinette is released in cinemas on October 23rd and streams exclusively on MUBI from November 6th.
