Book Review | The Pirate Angel, the Talking Tree, and Captain Rabbit

Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket and Groot take center stage in this Middle-Grade novel

Set during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, The Pirate Angel, the Talking Tree, and Captain Rabbit tells readers what went on off-screen during Thor, Rocket, and Groot’s trek to Nidavellir. In the book, we finally find out just what Groot was doing with that tablet the whole time. I’m sure that, like me, you assumed he was playing a game. In reality, he was reading Rocket’s journal of past events! Through the journal entries, Groot learns about past adventures he had with Rocket before they met up with the rest of the Guardians, and reads about other adventures they all went on together.

This book gives great insight into Rocket’s mind. He comes off in the movies as a bit of an uncaring jerk, but he actually has a soft spot, and not just for Groot. The adventures detailed here show that he can be heroic and think of people other than himself. Most of the adventures detailed fill in the gaps between Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Vol. 2 and Infinity War. While we don’t really learn much in the way of new information during the group’s time together, the backstory is always welcome in fleshing out characters in my book.

Marvel Heroes Assemble

Author Steve Behling is a writer and editor of children’s materials. He is an associate creative director for Marvel Entertainment and Disney Publishing Worldwide. His other books include Captain Marvel: Starforce on the Rise and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War: The Heroes’ Journey, both Middle-Grade novels. Behling did an excellent job of capturing the characters personalities, and I could truly envision this in my head with the actors who portray them.

Recommended for young fans of Rocket and Groot, and of the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame movies.

The Pirate Angel, the Talking Tree, and Captain Rabbit by Steve Behling is published by Marvel Press and is available to buy now.
