Iger will remain with the company as Executive Chairman until his contract expires next year
News is hitting the wires that Disney have appointed Bob Chapek as Bob Iger’s successor ahead of his looming departure from the company. Iger will assume the role of Executive Chairman, directing the company’s creative direction, and leading the board until his contract ends on 31st December 2021 when he will end his time with the company.
Iger Announced his intention to step down as CEO back in April 2019, shortly after closing the deal to acquire 20th Century Fox. In the months that followed, Iger has overseen the launch of Disney+ in the U.S and it’s resulting rollout across the world.
According to reports, Iger will step down effective immediately but will remain on board as executive chairman through to the end of 2021. Chapek, who’s been steering the fortunes of Disney Parks in his role as chairman since 2018 will now assume control making him just the seventh CEO in the company’s history.
In an official statement, Iger explained “With the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer business and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the right time to transition to a new CEO”
With the Star Wars movies on self-imposed hiatus and the MCU facing a bold new chapter minus many of its tentpole heroes, Chapek will be facing down some hefty challenges right from the off. Whether he’s up to the challenge remains to be seen, but time will tell.
