RoboCop co-writer Ed Neumeier is developing a Dick Jones prequel series without ROBOCOP!
Okay, I did not see this one coming. RoboCop co-writer Ed Neumeier is actively developing a RoboCop prequel series focussing on the early days of OCP (Omni Consumer Products) and its notoriously corrupt Senior Vice President DICK JONES.
Neumeier revealed the surprising news emerged during an interview with MovieHole: “I’m working at MGM on it. It has all the cool stuff about RoboCop except no RoboCop. I’m working with these two writers, Dave Parkin and Rob Gibbs, who bought this idea to a TV producer friend of mine, who then brought it to me. The first time I heard it I knew it was a cool idea because I could see a lot of things you could do with it. It’s such an interesting character.”
In the original movie, Dick Jones was played memorably by the great Ronny Cox, and Ed Neumeier said that getting to follow a younger version of the character will be interesting because “nobody necessarily starts out being the bad guy. So it’s going to be about the evolution of Richard Jones to Dick Jones, the story of OCP, and how the world moves into the future, how the corporate world behaves,” explained Neumeier.
Although the series is in “active” development, Neumeier said that they still have to convince MGM to let them make a pilot – so the series is by no means a guaranteed deal. But it’s nice to see RoboCop (or at least its characters) being dusted off and rejuvenated for modern audiences. Now, if we just get that pesky RoboCop Returns movie we’ve been begging for – that’ll be cool!
Are you open to a RoboCop prequel series without RoboCop? The concept worked for Gotham, but does the RoboCop franchise have characters strong enough to sustain an entire series? Drop us a line and share your thoughts. We dare you!
