Baltasar Kormakur to direct for Universal Pictures
Aside from shortlisted as a potential candidate to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond following his retirement in No Time To Die, Idris Elba is a busy man. Not only will he be suiting up as Bloodsport in James Gunn’s superhero romp The Suicide Squad, but THR is reporting that the veteran actor will also be testing his survival skills against a man-eating Lion in Beast.
The survival thriller is set to be helmed by Baltasar Kormakur and will be distributed by Universal Pictures and is said to follow in the same vein as The Shallows. The nerve-shredding thriller featured Blake Lively being menaced by a voracious Great White Shark after she unknowingly ventured into its feeding territory. The movie was a thrilling creature feature that utilized some of the best computer animations to deliver a realistic interpretation of White Shark behavior.
Based on an original idea by Jaime Primak-Sullivan, Beast has been scripted by Ryan Engle, who penned Liam Neeson’s violent thrillers Non-Stop and The Commuter, as well as Dwayne Johnson’s fun monster flick Rampage. Will Packer and James Lopez will produce through their Will Packer Productions. Director Baltasar Kormakur is no stranger to the thriller genre, in recent years he has proven his chops with triumphs on Everest, and more recently Adrift.
This is wonderful news. As a fan of the gripping interpretation of the true man-eating Lion story The Ghost And The Darkness, I cannot wait to take my seat for this one. The movie featured the nerve-shredding true story of the “Lions of Tsavo” – a pair of male man-eaters that systematically hunted and slaughtered a large party of African railroad workers.
If Beast can harness even a shred of The Shallows‘ brilliance and sprinkle of The Ghost And The Darkness’ magic, the movie has the potential to be something truly special. And let’s face it, with Idris Elba facing off against a man-eating Lion – what could go wrong!
Sadly, as of press time, there is no official release date for the project. As soon as the situation changes you’ll be the first to know so keep it real, and keep it Future of the Force!
